• Easy migration from earlier SGML
• Widely understood
• Easy to learn, read, write
• Tools are/were ubiquitous
• Breaks up the problem of validation
  • use DTDs for what they're good for
  • complete by supplementing with other methods
• Many of the advanced abilities (data typing and data types)
  are of limited use in processing narrative text
