XML Training: Working With Files
Introduction to XSLT and XPath for Typesetters
(3-day course, with hands-on computer exercises)
XSLT is a transformation language that makes it easy to work with, manipulate, and
change XML files. XPath is a language for stating what part of a document you
want an XSLT expression to transform. Through lecture, practical examples, and hands-on exercises, participants
learn how to read and understand the XSLT and XPath syntax that typesetters are
most likely to need, and practice some of the simple transformations that are
common in creating a website or print publication from an XML source file.
This course is intended for people with
experience manipulating and using tagged files such as desktop publishing
files, typesetting files, or Web sites, and who need to fix file coding or
tagging problems, or manipulate tagged files or pre-publication data.
Prerequisites: Participants need to know how to create and manipulate files, the basics of text editing, and how to create documents for some presentation application (e.g., Quark Xpress, Ventura Publisher, PageMaker, FrameMaker, or an HTML browser). Also required is a working knowledge of XML, or completion of an XML course.
