Introduction to XML Typesetting

(2-hr introductory seminar)

Small- to medium-sized, professional composition teams are well positioned to provide XML services to publishers. You already have most of the skills and experience. But how do you typeset from XML files? How do you create XML from your page-makeup files?

You need to understand how your skills and experience translate to the new technology, learn how to get started, and assimilate a few technical details. A typesetter can offer significant value in the XML world of “single-sourcing” and database interaction.

We offer three hands-on courses specifically for typesetters:

In addition, because we recognize that XML production takes a typesetter outside conventional expertise, we offer a 2-hour seminar, “XML & Typesetting ” covering important stepping-stones to XML success:

  • understanding the publisher’s new goals,
  • XML technology and workflow models,
  • exposure to some production applications,
  • the way roles may change when XML is introduced,
  • opportunities for specialist expertise, and
  • how to reduce risks in an XML/SGML project.

Participants receive a resource kit that includes:

  • a list of relevant software,
  • information about XML and XSLT tools for Mac and PC, and
  • pointers to useful books and online resources.

Prerequisites: Working understanding of typesetting and content preparation. No XML syntax knowledge is required.
