Manipulating XML Content: A Conceptual Introduction To XSLT

(2-hr introductory seminar)

You keep hearing that XML is exciting; that once you have your content in XML you can do anything with it; that XML is powerful and flexible. And then you look at an XML file, and don't see what the fuss is all about!

The availability of XSLT, a comparatively easy transformation tool, has changed the way we think about files and their contents.

XSLT is the language that makes XML powerful and flexible. Using XSLT you can: convert XML into display formats (including HTML and Braille); make XML into tool-specific formats such as typesetting languages; and automatically add numbering, cross-references, tables of contents, and generated text. You can even use XSLT to convert documents tagged according to your DTD into documents tagged according to someone else's tag set.

Because we recognize that getting started is a challenge for a publishing team in the midst of production deadlines, we offer a 2-hour seminar, “Manipulating XML Content: A Conceptual Introduction To XSLT”, discussing the principles that underlie XSLT, what it can and can't do, and how it is being used in a variety of environments.

The seminar covers:

  • What XSLT is
  • Where XSLT is used
  • Logical components of an XSLT application
  • Watching a stylesheet in operation
  • XSLT is not good at everything
  • How XSLT transforms are being used in business

Prerequisites: This seminar is designed for people who are or will be involved in a new XML project. Prior experience with HTML or XML is not required.
